Cafeteria Recycling
During lunch time, students (and adults) should notice the layout of trashcans in our cafeteria. Instead of having one trashcan, we have several cans lined up to create an efficient process to dispose of our waste. We are recycling many different items now to cut down on our waste output and save some money. Each trashcan is labeled to show what it holds: 1) Liquid Waste (empty your drink containers) 2) Composting (Nondairy and nonmeat food products + compostable bowls) 3) Paper Waste 4) TerraCycling (Chip Bags, Drink Pouches, Energy Bar and Candy Wrappers) 5) Plastic Bottles (No Clamshell containers) 6) Garbage = anything else left on your tray, which is hopefully nothing! We also have Aquafina Collectors for bottles and cans as well at various locations. Watch the video below to see Eli explain how to proceed through the cafeteria disposal line. |
The average daily load of plastic bottles we recycle are 12.1 pounds. Multiply that by 180 days/school year and we recycle over 2100 pounds of plastic every year!

Paper Recycling
Every classroom has a recycling box for paper, and the offices and faculty room also have a paper recycling bin, which are emptied weekly. The paper is collected in the Abitibi Bin in the back parking lot. According to Abitibi, we have recycled 6.68 tons (13,360 pounds) of paper in the last year, meaning we have saved:
-114 trees
-20 cubic yards of landfill space
-27,401 kWh of electricity
-46,760 gallons of water
-20 gallons of oil.
Not bad for doing something so easy! (Stats calculated using Abitibi Recycling Calculator)
